What is AGNA

Applied Graph and Network Analysis (AGNA v. 2.1) is a free app dedicated to scientific research using Social Network Analysis, sociometry, and Sequential Analysis. It is mainly used in sociology, psychology, social psychology, anthropology, economy, behavioural science, communication science, and biology.

Using AGNA, you can generate social networks from sociomatrix data or from sequential chain data, you can perform various computational analyses (e.g. compute sociometric or centrality values or find the shortest paths between two nodes), and you can perform network visualisations.

System Requirements

Agna runs virtually on any desktop system, such as Windows, Mac OS or Linux that has Java installed. This means that AGNA requires a Java Runtime Environment (also called a Java Virtual Machine, JVM) to be installed on your computer. If you don't have a JRE installed, you can download it for free from Oracle here https://www.java.com/en/download/ or here (GraalVM).

You can download AGNA 2.1 for free from one of the following external links below:

Install

Download the JAR kit, which is a platform-independent installer, and double-click it. If a JRE is present on your computer, then a dialog box will appear, asking your permission to install AGNA. If you agree, a new folder called Agna will be created in a directory you select; this folder will contain all the files required by the app to run. Double-click Agna_2_1.jar, which is the AGNA executable.

You can also download the ZIP archive, which is a portable app; simply unzip it at a convenient place on your computer.

Run

To launch the application, double-click the file Agna_2_1.jar (an executable JAR-file), which is located in the Agna installation folder. On Windows, you can also launch it by double-clicking the exe file. Please make sure you already have Java (JRE/JVM) installed on your system.

If double-clicking the JAR doesn't launch AGNA, then either JRE isn't properly installed on your system or the .jar extension is associated to be opened with some unarchiver. As an alternative mode to launch AGNA, you can try running the following command in command line (or Terminal) after you cd to the installation folder:

java -jar Agna_2_1.jar

Uninstall

To remove AGNA from your computer, simply delete the folder Agna (which was created at installation time) and all its content. Please make sure you don't delete any important file you may have previously saved into the Agna folder.

Learn

You can learn about the main functionalities of AGNA and the meanings of the various indexes from the paper linked below: Marius Ion Bența - Studying communication networks with Agna 2.1 (in: Cognition, Brain, Behavior, 9(3), 567-574, 2005).
